There are many places that mold is able to grow – but the basement is the worst. This is because there is very little light and air circulation going through it. The pipes, walls, and floors are all vulnerable to condensation and leaks, making it the ultimate breeding ground for mold. The good thing is there are ways in which you are able to prevent it.
Though liquid is the number one ‘food’ for mold it is able to survive on the level of humidity that is in the air. When it is between 65% to 99% they will thrive and multiply at rapid speeds. One of the best ways to prevent it from growing in the first place or from growing back is to keep the humidity under 50%. During the winter months this number should be between 25% to 40%.
Reducing Moisture In The Basement
- Use an air conditioner in the basement that is not too large or too big.
- The ground should slope downwards six inches from the first ten feet of the exterior wall.
- An electrically powered dehumidifier or a natural gas desiccant dehumidifier will help to keep the humidity levels under 50%. These can cost anywhere between $20 to $100.
- Try to use a heat recovery ventilator or an energy recovery ventilator that will remove any extra humidity from the basement. It will also filter in fresh air and take away the mold spores and dust.
- Do not allow wet items to sit for long periods of time.
- Any cold water piped that have condensation should have insulation around them.
- Do not store clothes, papers, and other organic materials on the basement floor or near the outer walls. The moisture from the room will latch onto the materials and become an immediate breeding ground for mold.
Cleaning Basement Mold
The moment that you see a small patch of mold you need to take the necessary steps to cleaning it. Use thick rubber gloves and a face mask during the process to protect your skin. There are many basement mold cleaning products that you are able to use – which are effective at cleaning basement mold.
Some of these products contain large amounts of dangerous chemicals and require that you read and follow the instructions very carefully. However, there are others that are made using natural ingredients that are much safer to use.
Use the product and an old rag to wipe down the pipes, walls, floors, or any area that has been infiltrated by the basement mold. Any clothes that have mold on them need to be washed in the mold cleaner or vinegar and dried in high heat.
