There are different things that you can do when trying to prevent basement mold. One of the more effective methods is to install insulation. This is an expensive process – but it helps to prevent the growth of mold and can save you money on your heating and air conditioning bills throughout the year.
The problem with basement walls is that they will retain moisture. By installing insulation you are making sure that this does not happen. You are also making sure that any holes or fissures in the walls are filled in and no rain water is able to leak through.
How To Install Insulation
To begin you will need to attach the expanded polystyrene insulation foam sheathing to the wall’s foundation. This is the best material to use when you are trying to control large amounts of moisture.
Use strong tape around the joints of the wall. This will help to create weather resistant barriers and to keep moisture and air from coming through.
Purchase can spray foam to go around the seal. Start at the top and work your way down the insulation sheathing.
Install a portion of composite decking at the bottom of the wall. This will help to protect the area if water does happen to leak inside.
Frame the wall with pressure treated wood. Nail down the top plate into the first floor joists and the bottom plate into the composite decking. Use a level to make sure that it is all straight.
You can use fiberglass insulation or spray foam insulation or wet spray cellulose insulation to fill in stud wall holes.
Now install the drywall all around to cover it all. When the drywall is dry you can paint over it with a water based paint. This type is resistant to mold growth and is easier to clean.
